The Different Types of Sign Supports

The Different Types of Sign Supports

MUTCD & Safety Guidance   /   Oct 29th, 2020   /  A+ | a-

Drivers depend on signs for safer traffic, and signs depend on a strong foundation. The different types of sign supports have one thing in common: durability.

To keep roads from descending into chaos, drivers need traffic signs they can count on. The signs need to be in the right place all the time and so visible that they’re nearly impossible to miss. The different types of sign supports can offer all those guides and warnings the best foundation for dependability.

Posts

U-Channel

These use high-tensile steel to provide an efficient hold for traffic safety signs. They’re most common in areas with maintenance and light construction. U-channels are easy to assemble and install—and inexpensive, too.

Round

These steel tubes adhere to the sign in one of two ways: bolted directly through the post or clamped to the outside. They’re low cost and can mount signs at any angle.

Punched Square

These square poles sometimes feature perforating at one-inch intervals. Inserting another square tube inside will strengthen it further. Square posts have excellent flexibility, greater loading capacity, and the potential to mount signs on all four sides. They’re also inexpensive and easy to replace.

Breakaway Systems

Despite all precautions, accidents still happen. When a car hits a traffic sign, breakaway systems can minimize the impact by giving way at the base so that the entire post dislodges and flies into the air. The sign can then pass over the car instead of causing damage to it. All large steel posts for highways have a breakaway feature, unless they have the protection of a guardrail, barrier, or energy-absorbing system—or if their position is out of the “clear zone.” Breakaway systems often use a hinge, but different systems vary. At Custom Products Corporation, we’ve had decades of experience to judge the best methods. These include:
•    Safety Splice System
•    Lap Splice System
•    POZ-LOC Socket System

Mounting Supports

Sign posts need the right hardware to keep them standing, and experience has taught us to use the best parts and equipment. These include:
•    Sign savers
•    Couplers
•    Anchor plates
•    Surface mounts
•    Breakaway anchors
•    Surface mount breakaway bases

With safety at stake, each of the different types of sign supports needs to be of top quality. Custom Products Company carries first-rate posts, brackets, breakaway systems, and all the tools you’ll need for a sturdy traffic sign. Contact us to learn what’s right for you.
